International Women’s Day | March 8, 2015

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, is a day to honor and celebrate the achievements of women from around the world. With efforts dating back as early as 1908, the occasion is an official holiday observed in more than two dozen countries.

International Women’s Day is a time to recognize the amazingly influential women throughout history and today, from business to politics to athletics to philanthropy to celebrity.

It is a time to celebrate the amazing women we interact with on a daily basis and to express respect, appreciation and love.

Around the world, many people give  flowers and other small gifts to their mothers, wives, grandmothers and daughters, as well as co-workers, teachers and friends in recognition of Women’s Day. In the United States, the observation is growing with more than 280 events held nationwide in 2014.*

You can stay connected to International Women’s Day by liking their facebook page www.facebook.com/Internationalwomen’sday or following twitter.com/womensday.

  1. The bouquet of flowrs that are shown within the blog post looks like a really good buy for someone like me. I stay on a budget and if I can save a quarter, I’m on it.

    • The bouquet of flowers shown are Hawaiian tropical flowers and very long lasting. I highly recommend tropicals to a person on a budget because, even though they can be costly, they are always spectacular and seem to last forever!

  2. My mom, Anna. At 88 years old she’s still able to live alone, works a part-time job, bakes up a storm (all her grandchildren were raised on Mimi’s chocolate chip cookes, not Chips Ahoy) and is the first one to offer help whenever anyone needs it.

    • What a marvelous testimonial to your mother. Thanks so much for nominating her!

  3. What a creative idea! That is a very pretty arrangement for such an occasion. There are so many that deserve the admiration. Best wishes.

    • Thanks, Meryl! Feel free to nominate one of those amazing ladies and watch the magic happen!

  4. My dad after he passed away I began to blog so I can keep his memory alive. While writing I realized he was my foundation in all I do.I bet you never named a bouquet after a man. Spyro was his name.Click on the links below to see why.

    • Your dad was an amazing man. No, so far we have not named a floral arrangement after a man, but gee, why not? Since we are celebrating International Women’s Day March 8, we will name this bouquet after a woman. But Father’s Day is just around the corner, so don’t be surprised to see an offer to name an arrangement after a man! (p.s. My dad is a great inspiration to me, too! He’s 92, still living with my 86 year old mom after more than 68 years of marriage, and he sends her flowers every single month on their anniversary!).

  5. Giving them a stunning floral bouquet is one way of appreciating every women.

    • Yes, Rochefel, you are so right! Would you like to nominate a women to have this arrangement named after her?

  6. What a great idea. I would like to nominate Michelle Binaghi. Simply because I think it takes a really strong woman to raise a special needs child. I admire the way in which she raises hers. I think she goes above and beyond trying to find answers to help her son. He was getting a tube feeding and she helped to get him off of that and has worked very hard at finding healthy alternatives to make the Best life for her child. Plus she home schools him and runs a full time sewing business to make ends meet. What I truly admire is that I never hear her complain about the hand she’s been dealt.

    • Amy, this is marvelous!! I had no idea that Michelle is raising a special needs child, which just shows you how magnificent she is. I will certainly place her name into nomination for you.

  7. Great idea. Several years ago I was in Zambia Africa on International Women’s day, it was a very interesting and humbling experience. The issues that Zambian women and many African women have to deal are so far out of anything most North American women have to deal with.

I’d love to see a name reflect the Strength of women living in conditions we don’t understand. So I like “strength” not after one 1 women but after many.

    • What a beautiful idea this is, Heather. When I name the piece after one of the ladies nominated, I will certainly add “Strength” to the name. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story.

  8. This is amazing. I love the day and bouquet

    • Thanks, Debbie. I do have the names of some wonderful ladies and I know we’ll have a difficult time choosing the one who gets the bouquet named after her.

  9. I am sending my mom new business cards- she’s fierce, awesome, and loves practical gifts!

  10. I had no idea it was International Womens Day on that day. I’ll have to send my own mother who’s dying from cancer some flowers and Mother’s Day is right after. She’ll be thrilled.

    • Yes, Amanda. If I can help you find a real florist, I’ll be happy to help you. God bless your mother and you for thinking of her.

  11. It is a day dedicated to all of us women. We should empower our worth on that scheduled day.

    • Yes, Lorii, we should be empowered on that day and every day!

  12. Such a wonderful idea to honor the women we admire. There are so many that deserve such honor. Thanks for sharing!

    • Celeste, thanks!! Please nominate one of the many women you admire!

  13. I came to this blog with athe name of a women I met online and hope to meet in person. After reading all the comments< im hardpressed. So many fabulous ideas as is this blog & contest. Using a holiday or special event also brings our attention to it. I too would recommend Michelle Binagi for all the reasons Amy mentioned. I also think she is raising him as a single mom. My other thought is to create a name that encompases everyone.

    • Thanks, Roslyn, for reading the blog and re-nominating Michelle. She is a tower of strength and an inspiration to all of us.

  14. I love learning the history behind things. Thank you for sharing this. My nom would go to my mom, Mercie (full first name Emerenciana). She is technically my step mom, but is my mom to me. I was 20 when my dad remarried and she has been an amazing addition to our family. I was so blessed to have her enter my life and love me like a daughter when she technically didn’t have to.

    • What a marvelous testimony to a terrific lady! Please share this with her, so she’ll know how special she is!!

  15. I would like to nominate Melissa Ammons! Melissa creates beautiful rosaries and beaded products. Each and every year she donates 1/3 of her profits to the Alzheimers`s Fund. At the end of 2014, she donated over $700.00 to Alzheimers Research!

    • How wonderful. I didn’t know Melissa donated 1/3 of the profits to the Alzheimer’s Fund. I will certainly add her name to the list of magnificent ladies.

  16. I would like to nominate Michelle Binaghi for this NAME THE BOUQUET contest. She does all she can for her family which includes a special needs child. She is a mother, resilient, creative, an entrepreneur, business woman, talented, gifted artist, strong soul, I can go on and on. She supports others in their businesses & is a fair person. She is the type of person we all want to have as a friend, she cares and her heart shows it. I can not think of a more deserving real life person.

    • Danielle, Michelle is receiving more nominations than anyone, and I am learning so much about her from everyone who loves her. Thank you for the great nomination!

  17. It would have to be my indomitable mother Lillian Golden (“The Golden Bouquet” sounds good to me ;)), who celebrated her 99th birthday yesterday and is still vital and enjoying life to the max!!

    • How wonderful! What a marvelous tribute to your mom! I’m wondering if I can name it after 2 ladies!!
